They want to change the way we look at life in a retirement community. By making it a reality show. Ouch. The much-hyped new series Sunset Daze debuted this month on we.tv, a subscription-based, on-demand network that calls itself “the premier source for women looking to satisfy their curiosity with fascinating, original stories and entertaining, informative content that is relevant to key stages of their lives.” Mostly they’re talking bride-zillas and vibrators. Ouch again.
Meanwhile, back in Arizona’s Sun City (Oh, Arizona), where Sunset Daze is set, the show’s producer says he’s learned a retirement community is not “God’s waiting room.” Instead, he’s concluded, “You’re back in high school. The people we’ve met, the people we’ve talked to, the cliques, the jocks, the prom queen — they’re all here.” You know that phrase “a fate worse than death”? I think it applies.
I like Hank Steuver’s review in the Washington Post best.
Am I going to watch Sunset Daze? Not any more than I’ve seen on u-tube. But I’d love to hear what you think.
